DIY Shabby Chic Birdhouse

For the little bird who needs a pretty place to roost! Here are all the supplies you need to make this sweet little birdhouse:

Supplies
  • Wooden Bird house & candlestick
  • Burlap
  • Copper colored metal sheet
  • Fabric Flower Embellishments
  • E6000 Glue & Fast Grab Tacky Glue
  • Acrylic craft paint: copper & tan
  • Acrylic Crackle Medium
  • Ranger distress ink: Vintage photo
  • Vintaj Pantina: Clay
  • Foam Paintbrush
  • Embosser & Design Folder

Note: If you are using pre-embossed metal, the use of an embosser is not needed.

1. Glue the bottom of bird house to the top of candle stick with E6000.

2. Paint the entire candle stick and bird house with copper paint. When dry, paint just the outside of bird house with crackle medium (you don’t need to paint the underside) Let the crackle dry to tacky (time varies). Paint over crackle medium with tan paint - this will produce the crackle effect as it dries. For tips on how to crackle paint like a pro, visit our website.

3. Measure the roof and add 1/4” to 3/8” to dimensions. Cut a piece of burlap to this size. Glue the burlap to the roof using Fast Grab Tacky glue. Fringe the edges by carefully pulling a few of the strings that run parallel to the edges. To add the distressed look, take your distress ink pad and rub the edges of the burlap lightly with the ink pad.

4. Cut three leaf shapes (no larger than 2”) and one decorative name plate shape (no larger than 5” by 2”) from copper sheets using your favorite die cutting system or by hand

5. If you are using pre-embossed metal sheets, go ahead to step 6. Emboss sheets using your favorite embossing machine.

6. Brush patina onto metal pieces and wipe off excess.

7. Glue the name plate to roof with E6000. You may want to use rubber bands to secure the metal until dry. Glue three flowers and two leaves to the front of the house. Tie a short ribbon of burlap to the base of the candlestick and glue  a single flower and remaining leaf over the knot.
