What is Paper Quilling Art?

Do you know what quilling is? A lot of people look at this word and think "quilting"? No, it has nothing to do with sewing. It's about paper rolling techniques. Some are very simple, but some are a little more intricate. The art of quilling as been around for a long time, from monks during the Renaissance to the 19th century.

All you need is a few simple tools to start quilling. You'll need a slotted tool like shown below (which has a slot in the tip), and some paper strips like shown in the image with the beautiful quilled flower. The paper strips come in a huge selection of colors. Or you can even make your own if you'd like.

To get started, insert one end of a quilling strip into the tiny slot in your quilling tool. Make sure it's nice and snug, then start twirling the tool away from you. The paper should wrap around the end of the quilling tool, making a coil. Keep twirling the paper until the whole quilling strip is twisted on the quilling tool.

To help you get started, here are two video tutorials by av-visuals.com. Part 1 and Part 2 will show you some basic shapes for beginners that you will be able to use later on in more advance designs.
